The Patient Partner Program (P3) was established at the University of Tasmania’s Launceston Clinical School in 2005 to facilitate senior medical student encounters with patients with a chronic and often complex illness. P3 commenced at the Eastern Health Clinical School (EHCS), Monash in 2012-2013, as the P3 Patient Teaching Associate (PTA) Program.

Patient Partners or PTAs are volunteer patients from the community. They are recruited and consented to participate as partners in learning with the medical students.

The P3 PTA learning encounters occur throughout the Year 3 curriculum in order to foster the capabilities necessary for competent patient-centred consultations in clinical practice.

In 2012, Launceston Clinical School's P3 program won the national Office of Learning and Teaching Program Award.
